Mark Cavendish (SNO) held of arch rival Alessandro Petacchi (RSR) in the final 100m to take his third stage victory of the race. The bunch all finished together, so no change in the overall: still Carlos Sastre (SNO) fifth with Michael Rogers sixth for Lisa. Today's stage lifts Petacchi and Cavendish to second and third in the points competition but from here on in this Giro is all about mountains.

Although a noted time trial specialist, Bradley Wiggins (SNO) could only manage the seventh fastest time on today's hilly route. Likewise, triple world time trial champion, Michael Rogers, was back in fourteenth place for Lisa and slipped back to sixth overall. Carlos Sastre improved to fifth overall for Steve after clocking up the twelfth fastest time on today's stage.

With his chief rival held up by a crash in the last 10km, Alessandro Petacchi (RSR) had a free run at his second successive stage win, and in doing so claimed the maglia rosa. For Steve, Philippe Gilbert avoided the mayhem to take sixth place on the stage. Tomorrow we hit the mountains and, indeed, the first mountain-top finish of this year's Giro so it will be all change tomorrow but for now Petacchi reigns supreme.
