Paolo Bettini (RSR) led in the main bunch (behind the four riders from the five-strong, day-long break that lasted to the finish) in fifth place. Erik Zabel was 84th for Steve in a group two minutes further back. David Millar (SNO) was in the successful break but a chain failure right at the end led him to finish 119th (having thrown his bike over the barrier in disgust); he was credited with the same time as the fourth finisher from the break.
